Carolyn White

Carolyn White has been Associate Principal Bass of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra since 1973. The first woman to hold that position, she is a graduate of Indiana University and the recipient of numerous awards including the Edward J. Gilbert Memorial prize at the 1982 Double Bass Competition on the Isle of man, Great Britain. Outside of the orchestra she is very active as a soloist, chamber musician, arranger and teacher. Currently she is on the faculty of Webster University.  Carolyn has been Visiting Professor of Double bass at Indiana University and given numerous master classes at the University of Iowa and at the conventions of the International Society of Bassists. Her arrangements for both solo bass and bass ensemble are widely known and are published by International Music Company, Meridian Integrated Media and Bass Ensembles United.

Carolyn White plays an instrument made by Giovanni Gabrielli (c. 1750). While Music Director of the New York Philharmonic, Arturo Toscanini chose this instrument for his Principal Bass, Anselm Fortier.
